Breastfeeding Travel Tips

Travel Tips for a Breastfeeding Mum

Expert Advice from Abi Barham

Travelling with a baby can be challenging, but as a breastfeeding mum, you always have your baby’s nourishment ready to go. We asked Abi Barham, an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) with over 25 years of experience, for her top travel tips for breastfeeding mums. Abi, also a mum of two teenage girls, shares valuable insights to help make your journey smoother.

Plan Ahead for Smooth Travels

Whether you're breastfeeding directly or using expressed milk, preparation is key. If you’re expressing and bottle-feeding, wearable breast pumps like the Bubka Move or Pro can be a game changer. These pumps allow you to express milk hands-free while driving and keep the milk ready for your next stop. Remember, breast milk is safe at room temperature for up to 4 hours, but for longer trips, consider using a milk chiller or portable cooler.

Timing is Everything

Try to time your journey around your baby’s feeding and sleeping patterns. Many families find that travelling in the evening or early morning works best, as babies may sleep longer during these times. Starting your trip right after a feed can help your baby settle and make the journey smoother.

Build in Extra Time

Allow extra time for stops during your trip. Traffic, feedings, and breaks can extend travel time, so plan ahead. Research rest stops with clean facilities, food, and fuel to save time and make your journey more comfortable.

Stay Comfortable and Prepared

For breastfeeding mums, aim to stop every 2-3 hours to feed or pump. Skipping sessions can lead to blocked ducts or mastitis, so use each stop to offer a feed, even if it’s brief. Dress in comfortable, accessible clothing and a soft nursing bra to avoid restriction from the seatbelt.

Essential Packing List

Pack a travel bag with essentials, including:

  • Spare clothes, breast pads, and burp cloths
  • Pump, charger, bottles, teats, and milk storage bags
  • Nappies, wipes, and plastic bags
  • Cleaning wipes, hand sanitiser, and microwave sterilising bags
  • Extra layers, pacifiers, comfort items, and toys
  • A relaxing playlist, water bottle, and snacks for adults

Safe Travel Practices

Avoid feeding your baby in a moving car. Use stops for feeding and rest, ensuring everyone, including the driver, can take breaks. With some planning and flexibility, your trip can go smoothly.
