National Working Mums Day is all about celebrating the magic of mums juggling work, bub, and everything in between.
Breastfeeding Is a Full-Time Job—On Top of a Full-Time Job
Did you know that breastfeeding mums spend an average of 1,800 hours a year nursing or pumping? That’s roughly the same amount of time as a full-time job. And yet, many mums are expected to return to work earlier than ever, often navigating impossible choices between career growth and providing the best start for their babies.
The Reality of Returning to Work
A new report by Equity Economics, commissioned by The Parenthood, reveals a stark reality: Aussie mums fall behind globally in workforce participation after having children—and never catch up. This is despite ranking number one worldwide in education levels for women.
The impact is severe—more women and children in poverty, deepening gender inequality, and dragging down national productivity. While the "motherhood penalty" exists globally, few developed nations have done as little as Australia to address it.
Back in 2006, Australia ranked 12th for women’s workforce participation. By 2021, we had plummeted to 70th. If Australian mothers had the same workforce participation as Swedish mothers, they would earn an extra $696,000 over their careers and retire with $180,000 more in superannuation.
The solution? Expanded paid parental leave and universal access to quality early childhood education and care. Investing in mothers means investing in a stronger, more equitable future for Australia.
What You Need in Your Back-to-Work Toolkit
Returning to work as a breastfeeding mum can feel overwhelming, but with the right preparation, you can successfully maintain your breastfeeding supply. It’s not just bub’s bag you’ll need to pack—being prepared with your own pumping bag is going to reduce the mental load already associated with pumping and help you relax into your routine.
A well-packed pumping bag can make all the difference in ensuring a smooth transition. Here are some essentials:
-
A High-Quality Breast Pump – A reliable pump like the Bubka Wearable Hands-Free Breast Pump ensures efficient and discreet pumping during your workday.
-
Milk Storage Bags or Bottles – Proper storage is essential to keep your milk fresh and safe for your baby. The Bubka Eco Friendly Breast Milk Bags offer a sustainable and convenient option.
-
Breast Pump Wipes and Cleaning Supplies – Keeping your pump clean is crucial for hygiene and milk safety. Trusted, eco-friendly options like the Bubka Breast Pump Eco Wipes help ensure a hygienic and safe experience for your baby.
- Bubka Carry Case keeps your pump and accessories neatly organised, protected, and easy to grab between meetings or pumping breaks. Designed for working mums, it’s compac and keeps everything hygienic—so you can pump hassle-free, anytime, anywhere.
Communicating with Your Employer
A transparent discussion with your employer about your needs can foster a supportive work environment. The Australian Breastfeeding Association provides excellent resources to help guide these conversations.
Staying Hydrated and Nourished
Breastfeeding moms need extra hydration and nutrition. Keep a water bottle and healthy snacks nearby to sustain energy levels throughout the day.
Supporting Working Mums
At Bubka, we believe in supporting moms every step of the way. Whether you’re back in the office, working from home, or somewhere in between, the right tools and community can make all the difference. Here’s what every workplace should offer to support working moms:
-
Paid Maternity Leave – Because healing from birth and bonding with your baby shouldn’t be a luxury.
-
Flexible Work Schedules – Remote work and adjusted hours make a world of difference for new parents.
-
Dedicated Lactation Spaces – No mom should have to pump in a bathroom stall or supply closet.
-
A Culture of Support – From managers to coworkers, a little empathy goes a long way.
Celebrating Working Mums Every Day
National Working Moms Day is about more than just recognition—it’s about action. Whether it’s advocating for better workplace policies, supporting a mom-owned business, or simply giving a working mom in your life a much-needed break, every little bit helps.
